About the workplace:

A nature center is a hub for visitors to a natural area. At the nature center, visitors can get more information about the nature in the area, the species present, and how best to experience the area. There are about thirty nature centers across Sweden. Naturum Ottenby is located in Ottenby lighthouse village at the southern tip of Öland and is part of the Ottenby Nature Reserve. The nature center features an exhibition that provides insight into the fascinating lives of birds and tells about the Ottenby Nature Reserve and the activities of the Ottenby Bird Station. In addition to the exhibition, Naturum Ottenby also offers visitors several guided tours and events aimed at enriching the nature experience for visitors. Naturum Ottenby is operated by BirdLife Sweden on behalf of the County Administrative Board of Kalmar County.

Job responsibilities:

As a nature guide and host, you are the face of Naturum Ottenby and staff the exhibition area and information desk. You greet all visitors with a smile and inform and inspire them about nature and culture in general, and Ottenby's birds, nature, and history in particular. Together with other staff on site, you are also responsible for the daily program activities of the nature center. The program activities include nature and culture tours as well as activities for visitors of all ages. The position also includes some administrative tasks, ticket sales for tours, and cleaning of the facilities. The work will be done in close collaboration with the manager of Naturum Ottenby and other staff both at the nature center and in other activities at the tip. Weekend work is included in the employment, regardless of the period.

Qualifications:

We are looking for someone with a strong interest in nature and birds who enjoys sharing their knowledge with others! It is advantageous if you are studying or have completed studies in natural sciences and/or educational studies with a focus on natural sciences at a college/university, or have acquired similar knowledge in other ways. Good knowledge of ornithology, biology, ecology, and geology is also advantageous. We expect you to express yourself well in Swedish, both spoken and written. Ottenby is visited annually by people from all over the world, so you should be proficient in English. Knowledge of additional languages is a plus. Experience in nature center operations, guiding, and other educational activities is also advantageous. Good local knowledge of Öland and the Ottenby Nature Reserve is a plus!

Good teamwork skills are essential as the nature center is managed by a small staff. You should have social skills with a good sense of service when interacting with both young and adult visitors. You should be responsible, outgoing, initiative-taking, and flexible while also being meticulous and having a sense of order. It is important that you can work independently as you will sometimes work alone. Solo work occurs with full responsibility for opening and closing.
